چکیده

We study the luminosity functions of high-redshift galaxies in detailed hydrodynamic simulations of cosmic reionization, which are designed to reproduce the evolution of the Lyman-α forest between z ∼ 5 and z ∼ 6. We find that the luminosity functions and total stellar mass densities are in agreement with observations when plausible assumptions about reddenning at z ∼ 6 are made. Our simulations support the conclusion that stars alone reionized the universe. Evolution of the Ionizing Radiation Background and Star Formation in the Aftermath of Cosmological Reionization

The temporal evolution of the ionizing UV background radiation field at high redshift provides a probe of the evolution of the early star formation rate. By comparing the observed levels of absorption in the highest redshift quasar spectra to the predictions of a hydrodynamic simulation, we determine the evolution of the photoionization rate (Γ) for neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium,...

A Cosmic Milestone I: Constraints from Metal-poor Halo Stars on the Cosmological Reionization Epoch

Theoretical studies and current observations of the high-redshift intergalactic medium (IGM) indicate that at least two cosmic transitions may occur when the universe reaches gas metallicities of about 10Z⊙. These are the cosmological reionization of the IGM, and the transition from a primordial to present-day mode of star formation. We quantify this relation through calculations of the ionizin...

A Cosmic Milestone: Constraints from Metal-poor Halo Stars on the Cosmological Reionization Epoch

Theoretical studies and current observations of the high-redshift intergalactic medium (IGM) indicate that at least two cosmic transitions occur by the time the universe reaches gas metallicities of about 10Z⊙. These are the cosmological reionization of the IGM, and the transition from a primordial to present-day mode of star formation. We quantify this relation through new calculations of the ...

The Damping Wing of the Gunn-Peterson Absorption and Lyman-Alpha Emitters in the Pre-Reionization Era

We use a numerical simulation of cosmological reionization to estimate the likelihood of detecting Lyman-α emitting galaxies during the pre-reionization era. We show that it is possible to find galaxies even at z ∼ 9 that are barely affected by the dumping wing of the Gunn-Peterson absorption from the neutral IGM outside of their H II regions. The damping wing becomes rapidly more significant a...

Searching for Star Formation beyond Reionization

The goal of searching back in cosmic time to find star formation during the epoch of reionization will soon be within reach. We assess the detectability of high-redshift galaxies by combining cosmological hydrodynamic simulations of galaxy formation, stellar evolution models appropriate for the first generations of stars, and estimates of the efficiency for Lyα to escape from forming galaxies i...

Ionizing Photon Escape Fractions from High Redshift Dwarf Galaxies

It has been argued that low-luminosity dwarf galaxies are the dominant source of ionizing radiation during cosmological reionization. The fraction of ionizing radiation that escapes into the intergalactic medium from dwarf galaxies with masses less than ∼10 solar masses plays a critical role during this epoch. Using an extensive suite of very high resolution (0.1 pc), adaptive mesh refinement, ...
